I think ecommerce and customer portal is a must to have and must be from the same house (microsoft) in order to work perfectly together with the erp, inventory, finance, etc.
Many cloud erp companies targeting a built in ecommerce. I can list 20 names but it won't be fair to list them here. Microsoft will have to do it now in order to stay ahead and keep his customers ahead of competition! as the future leading us to see more and more end to end solutions.
most of the connectors, integrations and custom work are just slowing down the success of the customer which slow the success of microsoft and their partners. a growing company will always need more services from MS and its partners. Customer portal / ecommerce will have a positive effect on everybody including the partners that will have more implantation packages for the portal or ecommerce as it's the face of the company. respecting the partners that building connectors and ecommerces. but 500$ per month is not a reasonable price for ecommerce in 2018.

This is a must , with the likes of Sage and other competitors already offering this out of the box

Business Central is directly competing with Odoo and right now Odoo is doing all that and allot easier for users. Its more intuitive and easier to use. Dont underestimate time and effort going into training staff to use Business Central - it takes significant resources.
So B2B portal and E-commerce is a "must"

That would be the best feature Microsoft has never released!

We will be implementing D365 in Q2 of 2019, would really appreciate development of "in the box" portal for external clients to be able to review defined metrics and embedded Power BI.

Don't build a second ERP for the web as we have already one. I would think about adding external users (Need o365 credentials so think about the potential and ease of use) to dynamics 365 Business Central where you ask 100 USD/month for
Limits:
Max 4h/day access/user (otherwise full price)
1000/10000 external users (eg telemetry can help define the cutoff on internal users vs external order intake so discussion on multiplexing is gone)
10000/100000 transactions (postings to orders, invoice, ...)
Keep it Simple
Might need to add security setting roles but please keep it open for additional apps and extensions to add customer-specific functionality.

I would only like to add that, while this is a feature I would like very much, an even more powerful feature would be the ability to interface with other service management SaaS's and systems. More and more it seems even our end user customers are using systems like Monday.com or the like in order to track vendor service requests for multiple vendors in one place instead of them having to use every system each one of their vendors may or may not have.

In my opinion this should have been a core capability from day 1. And not only B2B. This should be a B2B and B2C customer portal so that we can create the best customer experience possible. Keeping customers (whether they are other businesses or end users) connected to our manufacturing process is key to forward thinking communication and engagement. In general we get notifications for everything around us. It should be no different when we are working with a customer. We should be able to push notifications to a customer portal, or direct via text or email to update customers on the status of their product. The speed of business has changed, and businesses that can excel at clear, precise and accurate communication will come out ahead. A customer portal will allow us to achieve all these KPI's.
