There are alternatives by providing a custom assist edit, custom 'Show xxx' action (e.g. 'Customer' action on Sales Invoice), provide a factbox with limited information, ... but having an overall 'Edit' option on the fields having a tablerelation would ease the navigation of the end user.
Comments
We have pages with a dozen fields with lookups. It is not possible to express them all in the fact boxes: it would still be inconvenient for the user.
It's not just a productivity problem, but it does affect the judgment the user has on the application. Tt is essential to release this feature as soon as possible.

In favor. It's something we have been adding to a lot of pages, just because of the single mouse click experience.

It is not always needed to open the card page.
Business Case: Accountant looks into Value Entries, remove filters, search for specific entry and wan to go to the associated Item ledger Entry. The click through Item Ledger Entry No. could open Item Ledger Entries page, not card page (there is no card page for item ledger entry).
In most cases these situations are when experienced user is trying to find out something, digging into the data etc. In these processes you need to click through few tables to find what you are searching for.

I'd also point out that the use of factboxes as a quick navigation aid on the web and windows client fails in the context of the phone client. It is often just as important in this context to quickly look up the related item, customer, etc.
This could be combined with a preview, hover type functionality that draws upon the brick view of the underlying entity.

SAP B1 has done this pretty well - with their ugly little yellow arrow that indicates a drilldown. NAV relies on the factbox - but it isn't always available or visible and doesn't work with everything. I agree if they can do this and pair it with a 'peek' preview they will make life much easier in all the clients - especially mobile.
